Recently, my nonagenarian mom was asked by a group of friends, "What do you think heaven is like?" My mom replied without hesitation, "I feel closest to God when I am in the mountains. When I am traveling through the Swiss Alps, the sense of peace and reverence fills my heart. This is what heaven must be like." I shared this feeling with my mother, five years ago, as we travelled through the Alps on our way to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany.
On my Rick Steves' Europe tour, I once again was able to experience the wonderment and beauty of the Swiss Alps. A small miracle, the weather cleared for just a couple of hours, we were able to enjoy the three dramatic peaks: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Our viewing point, was at the top of the Schilthorn mountain peak at 10,000 feet.
